NDIS Short Term Respite (STR) in Melbourne, Bendigo and Geelong.

Planned short stays with full support, giving you and your family a break.

Short Term Respite (STR), formerly Short Term Accommodation (STA). NDIS respite across Metropolitan Melbourne, Bendigo and regional Victoria.

What Is NDIS Short Term Respite?

Short Term Respite (STR) allows you to have time apart from your primary informal supports, the family and friends who provide you with significant daily disability-related support. It gives them a short break to sustain their capacity to provide support, while you are supported by trained staff in a safe, comfortable environment.

What Happens During STR

Support That Feels Planned and Safe

  • 24/7 support from trained Disability Support Workers
  • Assistance with daily living and personal support
  • Meals in group or centre-based settings

This support was previously called Short Term Accommodation (STA) under the NDIS. The name changed to better reflect its purpose as respite support. The service itself is the same.

Funding and Support Ratio

STR is usually funded at group pricing, meaning you may share supports with other participants. If you require individual support due to your disability, this needs to be evidenced and approved in your NDIS plan.

When Short Term Respite Might Be Right for You

STR can support planned breaks, routine changes, and situations where your usual informal support network needs temporary relief.

Common Situations

Three Times STR Can Help

  1. 1

    Respite for Families and Representatives

Your family provides significant daily disability-related support and needs a break to rest, recharge, or attend to other responsibilities. STR gives them that break while you are supported in a safe environment. Regular breaks are important for sustaining those support arrangements over time.

  2. 2

    A Short Break for You

Time away from your usual routine in a supported environment. A chance to experience something different, try new activities, or simply have a change of scenery while your primary informal supports take a break.

  3. 3

    Unplanned Respite Needs

Sometimes circumstances arise unexpectedly: sudden illness of your primary informal supports, unavailability of your usual informal supports, or a temporary change in your situation. We work to accommodate unplanned respite requests where possible, depending on availability.

Looking Beyond STR?

If you need longer-term or transitional accommodation rather than a short break, Supported Independent Living or Medium Term Accommodation may be more appropriate for your situation.

How STR withMyxa Works

1

Enquire and Check Availability

Contact Myxa directly or have your support coordinator get in touch. We check availability across our properties and confirm whether we can accommodate your stay. STR availability depends on current capacity.

2

Intake and Preparation

We gather information about your support needs, preferences, routines, and any specific requirements such as dietary needs, medication, or behaviour support strategies. Staff are briefed before your arrival so your stay is well prepared from the start.

3

Your Stay

You receive 24/7 support from trained Disability Support Workers under the Myxa Framework. This includes personal support, meals in group settings, daily living assistance, and communication with your family and representatives as agreed. The same standard of support that applies to our SIL service applies to every STR stay.
